Well, here I go...
This is my first attempt at creating a game mode for Garry's Mod. Given that, I keep asking myself why I chose the complex, and mind gnawing, hyper-difficult idea of creating a flight simulator for my first try. I mean, the physics are gonna be a bitch to implement using the Source engine, not to mention having to work at creating various navigation systems, an Air Traffic Control system, having models of the particular aircraft, and coding everything so it runs as hyper-efficiently as possible. That's a lot on my plate, though I honestly do not mind - hoping to take this one step at a time, learning what I need to do, asking for help when I need to (both with regards to coding and programming, and in regards to implementing physics), and balancing it out with essential life stuffs.
Before I continue, here is a little bit of information about me.
I've loved flying ever since I was at least 5 years old, ESPECIALLY commercial aviation, and whether it was being at an airport just watching planes take off, or land, or actually traveling on an aircraft to get somewhere, I couldn't get enough of it. Hell, I still can't get enough of it, and if I had the time and resources to, I would be learning how to fly for real. I read up on flying, how to fly, the history of aviation, even read up on the technical aspect of aircraft. When I fly, I collect everything form the in flight safety briefing cards, to the magazines, to the ticket folders and boarding passes. At home, I regularly partake in flight simulation - running Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 and X-Plane, the latter being supposedly a lot more accurate with regard to the physics, and enjoy setting up my sim to have as real an experience a I can get - within the limits of the game engines, of course.
I am also into computer programming, game design, and am currently majoring in computer science. Actually, I have already earned an associate's degree in Comp. Sci, and am in between, trying to find work AND choose a college to continue for my Bachelors in Comp. Sci. Where I focus my studies, however, I have not completely decided yet, since I like many aspects of the field. Computer programming, algorithm design, computer system architecture, networking, cyber security, it all fascinates me greatly, even with all the intricate mathematics, and abstract conceptualizing and theory involved.
This love of aviation, and enjoyment of flight simulation, as well as my heavy enjoyment of computer programming, and studying computer science, provide plenty of ammunition to make me want to try coding this gamemode. I feel like it would be a great experiment to see how accurate I can get flight physics in the Source engine. Attempting this would also be a great way, I feel, to keep myself from rusting so-to-speak when it comes to problem solving, and programming with efficiency in mind, as well as seeing how well I learn a scripting language on the fly. In addition, I've grown sick of being in Garry's Mod, and trying to fly aircraft with weird physics, on maps that are clearly too small to accommodate flying patterns, with controls that are clunky at least so far as key assignments, and hope that this experiment, should it be a success, provides those wanting more realism, and less headaches, a new outlet.
I guess you can say, with respect to this project, I am cleared for takeoff.
